International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

LINGAP-Canada joins the world in commemorating the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. On the 23rd of December 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided that the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples shall be observed on the 9th of August every year. The date marks the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations in 1982.

"As part of the commemoration, the Indigenous Peoples and Development Branch-Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues/DISD/DESA is organizing a virtual event. Indigenous Peoples, Member States, UN entities, civil society, and the general public are all invited.

This commemoration will focus on "Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract".

Date: Monday, 9 August from 9 am to 11 am (EST)
